Akuru multilingual font and language platform
Overview

Project overview.

Akuru is a platform for creating and managing multilingual fonts, with a focus on Sinhala, Tamil, and English typography. We built desktop tooling for type designers and a connected ecosystem tied to the AkuruCon typography conference.

The platform bridges traditional calligraphic craft with modern font engineering, giving designers the tools to produce production-quality OpenType fonts with complex script support.

  • Desktop font design and management application
  • Complex script shaping for Sinhala and Tamil
  • Font validation and export pipeline
  • Community platform connected to AkuruCon conference
The approach

Preserving language through
modern type technology.

Each project moves through a sequence of carefully scoped phases. Here's how this one came together.

/ 01

Complex Indic script rendering

Sinhala and Tamil scripts require intricate glyph shaping rules, ligature handling, and contextual substitution that go far beyond Latin typography.

/ 02

Cross-platform desktop distribution

Building and shipping a native desktop application across Windows, macOS, and Linux with consistent rendering and font tooling capabilities.

/ 03

Open-source font community standards

Aligning with international open-source font standards while supporting the unique requirements of the Sri Lankan typographic community.
